In "Written in Bone," Sally Walker writes, "...the graves and remains of colonial settlers carry a message to the people of today.  They remind us not to forget their lives and accomplishments- and not to lose our connections to the past."  At our school, our 7th grade history classroom wants to bring our Colonial Unit to life with some lively literature, but we need your help to purchase a class set of books that our students can enjoy year after year.  "Written in Bone" follows scientists who use state-of-the-art methods to decipher clues about America's colonial past.  Just as forensic scientists use their knowledge of human remains to help solve crimes, they use similar skills to solve the mysteries of history.   "Blood on the River" is the story of a 12-year-old who finds himself aboard Captain John Smith's ship headed for the New World.   Why read such long texts in a history class, you ask?  Reading and history go together like peanut butter and jelly: perfectly delicious by themselves, but dynamite together.  In this history classroom, students learn about American history not just by taking notes and reading from a textbook but also by reading interesting articles and short stories.  Incorporating ELA into the History classroom setting brings history to life, because our past is so much more than dates and facts and dry memorization.  History is alive, and we are living it.   With this money I will purchase a class set of each of these books and an audio recording of "Written in Bone." I plan to begin our Colonial Unit on September 12, but we probably wouldn't start reading the books until September 18.  Anything you can donate to help our cause would be admirably appreciated!
