Part of our weekly Wilderness Wednesday curriculum will be to have a choice time in our outdoor classroom with our K-1 classes. During this time I will be implementing the yoga moves the children have been introduced to through the yoga cards in their morning meeting into a yoga class. The children will begin by laying out their mats to designate their own space for this practice. These mats will allow the children to safely perform their yoga moves while still enjoying the outdoors. It is a grounding experience to perform yoga outside. Then I will begin the practice with the singing bowl as a sign that it is time for our focus to be drawn to our yoga. I plan to use the signing bowl to help guide the children in a deep breathing exercises to ready their bodies for their yoga practice. Yoga practice helps build the children's concentration, patience, and body awareness. In addition, setting aside a routine time to practice yoga will allow the children to have an outlet for frustrations. As well as, having a yoga mat available in the classroom for students that may need to take a break in order to refocus themselves for their work will be an emotional benefit to for all children.
