I am a new librarian in the district without a library budget. The high school library's collection is in desperate need of updating. I am requesting books that cast diverse characters and include culturally relevant topics to help promote reading among these bright, underprivileged students. Students do not have access to books that most accurately reflect their heritage, interests, and lives. In my cart, I included several nonfiction pieces of interest specifically to bolster a nonfiction reading assignment in a history class. The current selection of nonfiction books in the library do not support this assignment, and are not of interest to students or are not relevant to their lives. I included a few graphic novel titles to improve our graphic novel section, which includes only three titles. I added book titles that are award-winning, including books which have been National Book Finalists, Coretta Scott King award winners, and the Stonewall award winners. I anticipated a few new titles that our students will be wanting as soon as they come out. The majority of the books I placed in the cart were selected for their display and affirmation of diversity and culture. I am excited to be able to provide students with a better reading experience. Our library needs some serious TLC, and I am here to do what I can without a budget. It would be a huge help to our district and to students of color in Iowa if you could purchase these books for our high school library. Help me show these students that they matter, their experiences are important, and their culture is relevant. We can do this together through quality literature.
