Having students engage with food and cooking is an incredible opportunity to explore some of the largest environmental and social challenges facing our planet. Exploring food systems can also give students hope and authentic experiences to make a positive change which students are craving. The majority of my students also have little experience cooking but are incredibly interested in learning.
The pots, pan, and other cooking equipment that you donate will help students explore their interests, develop essential life-skills, and address urgent environmental and social issues in my Sustainable Food System classes. Students will cook sweet and smoky beet burgers to explore the origins of agriculture, fresh turmeric curry to explore soil and human health, carrot top pesto and carrot pancakes to explore food waste, and other food labs from Stone Barns Food Ed curriculum.
Supporting these food labs will help students examine how their food choices influence the environment and communities and identify ways to create more ecologically and socially sustainable food systems.
