My students would be thrilled to have a snack cupboard in our classroom. There are times that our students are unable to join grade level peers at lunch or at choice time due to their behavior challenges. Having a snack cupboard in our classroom would allow students to have an opportunity to make healthy choices in a supportive environment. As students grow their social-emotional and behavioral skills, our snack cupboard will be one way we can reward them and support their good choices. Students will also have an opportunity to learn about their basic needs and explore how snacks and breaks can help them regulate their emotions and moods. Students perform better when they are given choices about their activities and learning environment. Having snack options available will give students a feeling of control over their experience in our classroom. This will lead to a better sense of community and belonging at school.
