As we study Egypt, students will learn about mummification! To bring this study to life, students will work in groups to mummify apple slices. During the project, students must create and decorate 4 Canopic jars with the head of Anubis and other traditional Egyptian symbols of their choice. Inside each jar students will place an apple slice and one of four preservation solutions: salt, baking soda, vinegar, and sugar. Prior to the experiment, students will make a hypothesis about which preservation solution will most likely best preserve the apple for 70 days. We will store the jars in the classroom for 70 days and allow the mummification process to complete. At the end of that time, we will re-visit the experiment and discover which solution best preserved their apple! We will debrief in groups and as a class to discuss students' findings.
