We have 25-30 students in most classes and quite often one child will not be able to focus and will start a chain reaction of distraction. Some of these children have been diagnosed with a hyperactivity disorder and may or may not be on medication. I would like to especially give these children, among others, an opportunity to satisfy the need for their brains to be stimulated. A standing desk, foot band or small fidget will ease their minds just the right amount so they can focus. Each child is different, so a variety of stimulus may need to be tried until we find the one that works best. I also want to explore every option possible before turning to medication. Studies are beginning to reveal a connection between mind altering drugs (such as those to control ADHD)and mental instability and harmful behaviors.
