Students in elementary school are used to traditional "elementary school" instruments. They have played the recorder and xylophones, but now they need something more. I would love to incorporate ukuleles in my fifth and sixth grade classes to give students the ability to play an instrument that they can feel confident in outside of school. Students will play in group settings, learning how to strum and pluck the instrument, as well as have the opportunity for solo projects. If this project is funded, a ukulele club would be formed at the school in order to give the students a chance to learn more than the confines of class time allow. The ukulele is a fantastic introduction instrument for strings and allows students the ability to play and sing songs that they are familiar with.
