These copies of The Odyssey will allow students to engage fully in Homer's major ancient Greek tale of Odysseus' journey home. This project will, for most of my students, allow them to experience this classic story and Greek mythology for the very first time. The Odyssey is the second-oldest surviving work of Western literature and many older translations, such as the worn and crumbling versions I have taught, leave students baffled and disconnected from the story. This modern, highly-regarded translation, on the other hand, captivates them. In the past, I have read aloud from my one copy of this translation, witnessing students' faces light up, seeing their delight emerge with ease. The Odyssey is at the heart of the Western literary canon. It is still taught at elite prep schools, but is vanishing or nonexistent in many public schools. This leaves students such as mine disconnected from these ancient, fundamental stories. All they need, quite simply, are copies of the books. With these books, they will step into Homer's ancient world, which contain themes and motifs that, no matter what a student's background, serve as a common literary heritage. These books will serve as a lifetime compass for students' exploration of themselves and future literature.
