Reading can open doors for students. Books with good photography and illustrations can help build background knowledge. My ELLs come to school with many vocabulary gaps. Often times my students are too afraid to tell their classroom teachers that they have no idea what is being talked about in the classroom. They then come to me and ask the questions they are too scared to ask in class. It is eye opening to see what we take for granted. Many of my students lack the vocabulary for everyday items or animals. By having a classroom library my students are not only able to close their gap, but build knowledge to help them in their class room and the outside world.

About my class
