Despite the friction that comes with replacing former teachers, I was able to quickly form close bonds with my middle school students and help lead them to levels of academic growth that prove the achievement gap can be closed. My students, whom are nearly all African-American or Latino, attend a turn-around K-8 charter school in Colorado. Essentially, the school has two more years to drastically improve the students' scores on standardized tests and the general level of education provided, or it will be shut down. This school has served as a beacon with the neighboring community since it was opened by parents and community members in the early 2000s. While there have certainly been organizational struggles, everyone in the school community is driven to see our school succeed. This spring, I taught my students about the achievement gap and they were determined to see it close. Within 4 months, they improved their average reading comprehension score from 10% to 75% in the nation.
