First graders are full of life and eager to learn. However, our ability to focus on reading, writing, math, and science is often hindered by difficult behaviors and unregulated emotions. As first grade teachers we not only teach academics but we teach kids how to be students so they can be successful learning in an environment with others. We teach about keeping our hands to our selves, maintaining personal space, and appropriate ways to express our feelings. We also work to teach empathy, kindness, and confidence so that our little students grow into friendly, caring, members of the community. I'm requesting a variety of books including Just Want to Do It My Way! My Story about Staying on Task and Asking for Help, Decibella and Her 6-Inch Voice, I Just Don't Like the Sound of No! My Story About Accepting No for an Answer and Disagreeing the Right Way!, Strictly No Elephants, and Bubble Gum Brain. These books will guide lessons and discussions on a variety of topics that first graders need practice with such as how to be a friend, what to do when something doesn't go your way, and controlling impulses.
