A few years ago, I began to focus on my own wellness and mindfulness journey. The strategies I began to implement became a daily practice, and I experienced lower levels of stress and increased moments of joy. The skills I gained through my own personal experience with mindfulness and mindful movement, like yoga, allowed me to become more present, patient and at peace throughout the school day. It has been my dream to get specialized training in these areas so I can ethically and responsibly incorporate them in my classroom. After seeing how much my own experience changed my abilities as a teacher, I can only imagine the amazing transformation that would occur if my students had access to these wellness strategies as well. The students I teach are truly incredible and come from so many different backgrounds and experiences. Each day I learn something new from them, and I am so grateful that I get to be a part of their education and growth into informed and responsible change-makers in their communities. Many students, especially students with disabilities and mental health difficulties, face challenges both in and out of the school environment. Wellness tools like mindfulness and yoga empower students to love, take care of, and advocate for themselves. Being able to use these tools in the academic setting will set up my students for success in facing these challenges and gaining skills to utilize beyond their high school education.
