The four components of language learning are reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Reading and writing are easy enough to cover in the classroom. The other two skills are a little harder to address, especially in large classes. Students studying a foreign language must have opportunities to speak the language on a daily basis. In a class of 25+ students, all wanting to be heard, it is impossible for each student to get the necessary amount of practice every day. These on-ear headsets will benefit my students in multiple ways. The headphones will allow them to interact with audio and video materials produced by native speakers, while the microphone will allow all students to practice speaking at the same time. I will be able to give students meaningful feedback on large portions of speech, rather than just the few sentences they would have the opportunity to formulate when participating in a class discussion. Finally (and perhaps most importantly for my beginner students), these headphones will provide an opportunity for students who may be shy or nervous to build their confidence, making them more likely to participate in the future.
