One major goal for our school is to increase our students reading scores. This year we tackling literacy from many sides. One part of the approach is to develop good writing skills and foster a love for it. We have decided to use the Writer's Workshop curriculum to help our students achieve this goal. Writing well is a skill and art that helps strengthen critical thinking skills and critical thinking is needed to both read and comprehend well. Writing and reading are interconnected. For younger students, writing help with phonemic awareness and phonics. As students progress so do the benefits of good writing. As they get older, writing can help them understand the different styles of texts that they read. Additionally, when students write about what they have read, it helps their comprehension skills. Third grade is a benchmark year and it is of the utmost importance that our students master literacy as they approach the state test.
