Our state has mandated that students with significant disabilities and complex needs be exposed to and taught alternate academic standards just as their general education peers are. In working towards that goal, we have worked towards a curriculum using a variety of manipulatives using grade level content. We are requesting Velcro hook and loop dots so we can make creative and novel manipulatives for them to work with hands on to learn higher level academics and functional skills. In order to target these higher academic expectations and standards, we need to make creative and unique manipulatives to help our students bridge the gap between what they know and what they need to know. A variety of adapted books, task cards and work binders using Velcro manipulatives to interact with the content will enable our students to work on and master these alternate academic achievement standards.
