Books are powerful because they send messages about what and who are important and valued. During my K-12 education, I rarely read books with characters who looked like me, so finally seeing myself represented in a book is powerful because I felt seen and included. Similarly, stories and novels about math concepts are less common and accessible to young students. Books about math began to be exclusively math textbooks. Many students, especially girls, stopped enjoying math and started to think "math's just not my thing." As an educator of color, I aim to educate the next generation of kind, compassionate, and engaged members of society by creating a classroom library that includes diverse stories and characters. As a math teacher, my goal is to foster my students' love of math and to show them how math connects to their daily lives. The books that I am requesting are chosen specifically for their representation of math literature, and of lessons about accepting differences. With more diverse and inclusive books, my students will be able to choose books that reflect or expose them to different identities and experiences. Thank you for helping me shape our youths into mature, thoughtful, and empathetic individuals.
