¡Leer es poder! Reading is power! Giving students the opportunity to read about other cultures and people can help develop a sense of tolerance, empathy, and social responsibility. For any student to be college and career ready, one must possess both excellent communication skills and the understanding of the practices and perspectives of others. The world language classroom offers the perfect environment to foster a love of language, communication, and cultural appreciation. Through the use of a bilingual classroom library, students of Spanish will not only be able to build vocabulary to aid in target language acquisition, but they will also be exposed to cultural perspectives, products, and practices of the Spanish-speaking world. Students will be encouraged to participate in guided book clubs, free voluntary reading, and both whole-group and small-group reading circles using a variety of texts in both English and Spanish. The knowledge gained through these instructional practices will empower students to question philosophies and ideas and create new values and beliefs for a better tomorrow.
