As the fourth grade reading/ ELA teacher, I teach students to read to learn, as well as to learn to read. In order to do this, I need mentor texts (GREAT, classic texts that little learners will remember forever) for every reading strategy and skill I'll teach this year. For example, when teaching students how to sequence the events of a story, I could read to them a text like Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale, then model for them how to sequence the important events from the text. Also, because Knuffle Bunny is such a loveable, memorable character, using this text in lessons will foster a love for reading and an interest in character development, which could then even (hopefully) lead to a lifelong desire to read for pleasure among many students! Since my entire school year will be spent teaching my fourth graders to read, and read well, mentor texts will be the greatest asset I'll have to foster a love of reading and learning with my 90 little readers! Books, especially mentor texts, are the basic needs of all teachers, especially Reading teachers, like myself. Having a vast collection of mentor texts to choose from and utilize as I teach reading skills and strategies this year will be the greatest blessing and tools I can use to form my fourth graders into life-long learners!
