In every foreign language classroom there is a common battle being fought everyday. That battle is against the use of our students using Google translate to complete projects, homework, and a variety of other assignments. Sure, Google translate is quicker and more convenient than getting up and looking up a word or phrase in a book or dictionary; however, this convenience comes at a terrible cost, correctness. Google translate simply does not understand the context of the words and sentences that we input into it. Every year this technology gets better and better, but it is still nowhere near the level it should be at. When it comes to translation, context is king. The key strength of dictionaries is that each word looked up comes with examples of how the word is used in context, something very important that google translate cannot do. By having dictionaries in our rooms for our students, we can most certainly save them from becoming misunderstood, embarrassed or even in some cases prevent them from unknowingly insulting others through miss-translation.
