Students at SMHS are required to take 1 full year of PE before they graduate. Most of my students are freshmen, so that means I get the privilege of helping them feel a part of the rich culture that we have at SMHS. This is my 2nd year teaching at SMHS. Although the building is less than 10 years old, the gym was not designed with a sound system that can easily be used by my PE classes. A lack of a sound system poses many challenges for me as a teacher and for my students. In a gym that seats over 2000 people, the space is large! I am constantly shouting so that my voice can be heard by all my students. The first and primary use for the Portable PA system would be for communication through a cordless headset. This would save my voice and allow my students to clearly hear my instructions in the large space. A second and crucial need for a Portable PA system is for fitness testing. We utilize the FitnessGram program, which requires the use of a standardized audio recording. Without a sound system, I have simply had to loudly call out the tests, which frankly, makes my fitness testing inaccurate. The final reason that my students learning and classroom environment would benefit would be through music! If you don’t already know, high school students love music! Music so often energizes a workout and is at the heartbeat of a great workout routine!
