My students struggle to engage with academics, especially when their learning has historically not represented who they are, or where they are from. Many of my students find reading daunting, and often avoid picking up a book, especially if they are not interested in the topic or if they feel that the main character is nothing like them. I want to fill my shelves with high interest and culturally respective books that will spark the interests of my students, some of whom have never read a full book before. I am working to create an environment that will engage and excite academically challenged students. It is my belief that offering these titles will help my students discover an interest in reading, as well as improve their reading levels in the long run.
