Traditional seating doesn’t always lend itself well to collaborative work. Flexible seating would make it easier (and more comfortable!) for my students to work in small groups or partnerships. This helps us build classroom community. Many of my students need sensory input and stimulation to help them learn and process information, and flexible seating affords them the opportunity to satisfy those needs by “wobbling,” rocking, or moving in safe, controlled ways while still staying focused on their work. Ultimately, I want the environment in my classroom to be student-centered. I want my students to feel empowered to make choices that are best for their learning and begin to explore the concept of independence. These small changes in my classroom would have a big impact on their learning!
