Math skills are a big part of 6th grade. I've ordered composition books, dry erase markers, and calculators which will allow my students to create interactive notebooks. Students will be using the dry erase markers in groups on the white board to work out math problems. This will allow my students a sense of independence and help them to build their self esteem as a class. They will be able to identify their on mistakes in groups by working together on the white boards in class. The calculators are needed because this is the first year that students will be able to use them on their state test. Being able to practice with calculators will build familiarity, so when they take the state test they will know exactly how use them.
Allowing students to create interactive note books will allow them to learn how to take notes, and it also will allow me to build their math vocabulary. Students cannot full understand math, if they can't speak the language of math and use the vocabulary in the correct context.
