I will use each picture book to supplement our units on family and immigration. We will read them as a full class and in small group instruction. These books will improve engagement, and will get my students excited about reading. They will also give my students an opportunity to see that they are not alone in their experiences. Both classroom book sets will allow me to teach full class novels that are grade level appropriate, high interest, and accessible for language learners. "El Deafo" will allow us to look at themes regarding disability and difference. "Ghosts" will give us an opportunity to discuss grief and the way our culture impacts how we relate to our ancestors. Finally, some items will benefit my students when doing skits- a way to make learning vocabulary fun for everyone.
