Having an easel with a magnetic white board is an essential part of effective small group teaching and something currently missing in my 4th grade classroom. Having an easel is important because it allows me to be flexible in my teaching. I am able to address misunderstandings right away and give students multiple ways to practice a skill. Additionally, when using a white board, mistakes are no big deal. They are easily fixed and not permanent, taking away some of the anxiety. Small groups are a powerful educational tool. It allows me accelerate learning, (according to John Hattie, an educational researcher who looked at the results of hundreds of experiments to reach his conclusion) but it allows me to get to know my students in a smaller setting, and encourage them in ways I would not be able to in a group of 25.
