The book, Hoot is about a boy and his friends that join an effort to stop construction of a pancake house which would destroy a colony of burrowing owls who live on the site. This book is a Newbery winner. Having a new book of their own which we will be reading in class and be doing activities with, is a great way to motivate them in reading. With this book they will be doing research projects. Having their own book will facilitate the act of annotating in their book as they read. Most of my students are eager readers, and those that aren't welcome the challenge. My students are always wanting to "check" out books from my class library since it's not that easy for them to get books. This book will enhance their comprehension skills and teach them about standing up for what matters.
