The graphic novels will be an innovative way of pulling students into the love and appreciation of reading. Students who are not avid readers will be more drawn to the graphic novels they can relate to. Students, especially my students who struggle will, can relate to characters who themselves are facing challenges. The Bicycle Desk will help those students who have a challenge focusing due to challenges such as ADHD; while the graphic novels provide a break from the continuous prose with the images that grab their attention. Currently, even the students who are not facing challenges such as ADHD, find it difficult to develop a love and appreciation of reading. This is due to the uninteresting novels that students have access to in the library; and the absence of a print rich home environment.
My greatest objective is to develop a keen sense of appreciation for reading through the use of a bicycle desk and graphic novels that will grab the interest of both boys and girls. Students will understand that reading can be fun; reading can be done alongside other activities. Reading is not static; it is a great way to explore the world.
