My project, Battle of the Books, is a district-wide reading incentive program. The purpose of this program is to simply encourage students to read good books and have fun while competing with their peers. My school is using the 10-book reading list and will have three-person teams. Each team will read four books on the book list. The school battles are held second semester. A typical "battle" is set up like a tournament or game, like College Bowl or Family Feud. The teams earn points by answering questions about the books on the book lists. Assignment to particular teams takes place at the competition. The students play several rounds, each against a different team. At the end of round one, points are tallied and the two teams with the most points are invited to a "Grand Battle." The other teams become the audience. The students gain knowledge and enjoyment from reading good books, sharing them with friends, parents, and teachers ... PLUS, a fun day of playing in the "Battle."
