Everyday my students have 10 minutes of Free Choice Reading. During this time they are asked to choose a book on a comfortable but somewhat challenging level and commit to finishing that book. They all have reading partners with whom they discuss their novels. I have a small selection of novels but they are looking to expand their selections and they are always asking for more choice. Having these books and an attractive display to store them will give the students immediate and easy access to a skill that will enhance all their facets of language learning. They are our future global citizens and this literature exposes them to the cultures around the world and places the French language is spoken. When they choose their own books, I don't have to convince them to read. Many of my students read more in French than they do in English! Having a larger variety of literature that is comprehensible increases their confidence in reading and writing and their output of the language is greater. All of these skills eventually lead to a better communicator and that is the ultimate goal of any language program.
