It is quite common that students who grow up in low-income districts fall below their grade-appropriate reading level. For example, I have had 7th and 8th graders walk into my room on a 3rd grade reading level numerous times. This happens for a diverse number of reasons. Half of the battle is motivating teens to want to finish a grade-level novel that excites them, and that they can relate to. My goal this year is to improve Reader's Workshop with books and related texts that motivate my students to want to read and write independently. My school offers us sets of books, but the titles are somewhat outdated and they are not in the best condition. Gun violence is a widespread problem and is something we deal with in my district more often than I want to admit. This book deals with real-life topics and aligns with our ongoing debate about gun laws. I believe that my students will grow academically and emotionally with the right tools given to them in Reader's Workshop.
