My students must build their critical reading skills to meet the increasing academic demands as they pursue their dreams of attending college. Although many students are competent readers, they shy away from challenging books. Classic literature not only sparks thought-provoking discussions, but it builds essential literacy skills. Research has shown that tasks that require close attention, such as the close reading involved in reading classic literature, increase the brain's capacity to focus on complex cognitive tasks. This ability to focus is essential in helping our students learn. The donations for this project will help my students build their critical reading skills as we read and discuss King Lear and The Importance of Being Earnest.
