I am creating a Mindfulness Space aligned with the school’s mission of supporting the social and emotional growth for elementary learners. Our school previously used the Mindfulness Room as a detention/time-out space and as in-school student suspension room. However, now this safe space will be used for our Pre-K thru 5th grade students to reconsider their choices while learning to decompress, reflect, and engage in multiple mindful and sensory based activities. Research states that the environment of mindful moment room should differ greatly from your average detention. Instead of plain walls and no windows, Mindfulness spaces should be filled with lamps, decorations, and plush pillows. Students having a difficult time in the regular classroom setting will be encouraged to visit the room and go through exercises like breathing or meditation, helping them calm down and re-center. They are also asked to talk through what happened. Help me to create a space for my students that encourages them to focus on what is happening to them in the moment. This safe space will help my students manage their emotions, decrease stress and anxiety, and redirect their energy in a positive way.
