My classroom centers on reading and writing workshops. This means that after a short 10-12 minute lesson, students are sent off to read and write, while I meet with them individually and in small groups. As they independently read and write, flexible seating will offer them choice and greater comfort. The variety of seats will empower my students by allowing them to choose the type of learning environment they want and need that day. One day, they may choose the chair ball, as it provides extra movement. However, another day they may choose a floor seat, so they can stretch out while doing their work. Choice is huge for children, and the simple act of getting to choose their seat is a huge motivator. As well, with greater comfort and mobility, focus and engagement increases.
