John I. Smith K-8 Center has a predominantly Hispanic population (90.8%) where a majority of the student are English Language Learners (ELL) and ESOL (English as a Second Language). Our lowest performing students are not always students with disabilities but students who have not mastered the language, lack vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. Of the 22 students, 18 are Hispanic, 2 are white, 1 is black and 1 other, demonstrating the need for exposure to a variety of materials that will aid them in mastering the language, increase their vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. These students have been identified as some of the lowest performing students.
