The majority of my students have never read a book in Spanish. They must have interesting, relevant and current material to read in order to ignite the love for reading. Education is changing every single day and so are the interests of my students. Students in my classroom don’t like to read in English or Spanish. I don’t have access to a current event magazine or newspaper that is at their reading level for my native speaker Spanish 2 class. My goal is to get them hooked on reading these magazines in order to transition them to short story readers and keep them reading in my classroom. Novice Heritage Learners who have never read a book in Spanish are more likely to read a magazine which is at their reading and interest level. Students who read these magazines will be more engaged and should be more inclined to read more for enjoyment! My hope is that they start reading on a daily basis in order to help them become readers. Weekly educational magazines will serve as a springboard to chapter books as they gain more vocabulary, comprehension and reading skills. I know that my students will enjoy reading the current events in Spanish at an appropriate reading level.
