My students have shown that they are able to succeed in learning the material. However, we have very limited resources to give the students hands on learning opportunities. By providing pH readers, I can more accurately teach about acids and bases. Using this technology, students will be able to accurately test various safe substances, categorize them as a base or an acid, and take precise readings of the strength of the acid or base. With the density samples, I can create a lab where students will apply their knowledge about density in a forensic style lab setting. In this lab, they can apply what they have learned to find the "criminal" in a more realistic setting with a collection of density samples. I can use a Geiger counter in tandem with a cloud chamber to teach radioactivity and allow students to discover the particles being released by isotopes. The microscope slides will give my Biology students more ways to discover with a microscope. While I do have access to microscopes, our slide collection is incredibly lacking; my students have often requested more opportunities to use the microscopes with different substances. Finally, the model kit for creating molecules is amazing to teach molecular shapes and bonding. My students have all loved visual representation in video format, but have also asked about hands on activities so they can visualize chemical bonding and shapes. This whole project has the focus of giving students labs and science that they can see, rather than the lackluster learning that comes with text alone. Studies show that students excel in scientific fields when they have been properly exposed to lab sciences.
