With the use of fluency and sight word centers I will be able to engage students in independent and self-directed learning. These centers will provide a space set aside in the classroom that allows easy access to a variety of learning materials in an interesting and productive manner. My objective is for all my students to master all their 1st grade sight words. Sight words are pushed heavily in this class because if a student can identify a word by sight without trying to decode or sound out the word they will become faster and more fluent readers. I will introduce each literacy center individually with small groups based on their reading ability to pinpoint their individual needs.
These centers will be extremely effective because they will strengthen student independence and accountability for high-quality work while increasing teacher time for small group instruction. These literacy centers will be used throughout the year in abundance. As my instruction method is direct instruction, small group and independent practice. These centers will be utilized as some small group but mostly independent practice based on the skill that they are most in need of. On a daily bases during the reading block after the students are done with desk work, they will break into small groups to work in literacy centers around the room while I call one group at a time to work with.
