The books will illustrate the importance of "literary merit" in novels/plays that they can relate to their lives and aspire for a better outcome. Many of my students benefit from reduced-price lunch. Also, they are thirsty for knowledge in search of their dreams. The books will not teach only my students literary skills but will provide them with relatable content that will stay with them forever. These stories of overcoming the odds can further challenge and inspire my students to do just the same. In a literature class, the goals are straightforward: to find the meaning in a work of literature which requires time, attention, and sometimes the help of others. Therefore, interpreting a piece of literature requires that the students find a personal connection to the work they are studying before they articulate a meaning. Students need to learn to deal emotionally with a different point of view in the classroom. The role of the teacher is to value their opinions and capabilities. Finding that combination for students is an everyday challenge. With relatable books, I hope to start a new trend of creating valuable, applicable lessons that not only teach literary skills but teach them real-world knowledge in preparation for the AP Exam!
