Learning the fundamental skills for reading and mathematics is imperative in kindergarten. In order to help my students achieve in my classroom, I want to increase the use of manipulatives, games, and interactive activities. Resources such as the different letter blocks help to build phonemic awareness and can be used during center time. Other manipulatives like the tens frame and counting bears can be used as a number recognition activity as well as to increase the understanding of number relationships. Hands-on activities reach a wide-variety of learners. When participating in hands-on and interactive activities, students are more likely to remain engaged throughout a lesson as well as have better recall of the content material. One activity I like to use the Jenga for is recognizing words that are classified as nouns, verbs, and adjectives. I tape a different noun, verb, or adjective to the Jenga pieces. When the students pick a block, they must use the word in a sentence. It is not only a new and exciting way for the students to learn about nouns, verbs, and adjective but to also create sentences that are more complex. Incorporating activities like these into my lessons and centers will allow me to help students more effectively. The resources mentioned above from my list will provide added supports to reinforce the necessary skills needed to be successful in both academics and in life.
