Pan balance activities increase student engagement and understanding. We will use the pan balances in class groupings of 4 so they can all manipulate the variables and equations during multiple lessons. We will begin by allowing the students to discover how variables and constants are balanced to teach them how to properly isolate the variables in a hands-on environment. After using the balances, we will take time to transfer the knowledge from the concrete to the abstract in algebraic equation form. By allowing students to manipulate variables and constants, they are able to more easily distinguish between different variables.
