"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" - Lao Tzu. I like this quote because it describes the importance of building independence. In my classroom, students are encouraged to try everything themselves before receiving extra help- whether it's unzipping their coat, writing their name, or solving a math problem. It may take some extra time, but it's worth it. There is nothing like seeing a student smile because they're proud of their accomplishments. By providing my students with cubbies and an independent work area, you will ultimately help build their independence and skill set. It's easy for students with autism to become over-stimulated by the world around them. With so many sounds, colors, and textures, it can be hard to concentrate on one thing. This special desk will eliminate distractions and will help students focus on their tasks, and the cubbies will provide them with a clear area to put their completed work. These materials will help enrich their school experience and will provide them with more opportunities to build their independence. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about my project!
