As a middle school teacher, it is important for me to foster a love of reading for my students. I love implementing literature circles as it gives students a choice, and allows them to find a genre they are excited about and interested in. To make these literature circles run smoothly, modeling must be done with one, whole class, literature circle. I love the novel Every Soul a Star by Wendy Mass because it is attainable for most middle school students to read, and is written from the perspective of three very different characters, allowing students to make connections to the character they relate to the most. Along with connections, this novel allows us to study point of view, setting, characterization and many more important skills to the curriculum. Short stories can only take students so far, novels are where the real "magic" happens.
