Recently, my school was blessed with a 3D printer through a grant from the Mark Cuban Foundation. The students have taken to the projects with great zeal! With my background in CAD and 3d printing, I am able to create videos for them to follow and create a great deal of interesting projects. These projects reinforce their design abilities, creativity, and math! As their art teacher, with a strong digital art background, I am pushing them to combine creativity and mathematics. I have never seen such excitement for computer-aided design in students so young. My students are from a Title I school, many of whom are finally able to explore computers. With our current pandemic and quarantine situation, these students each have a computer all of their own. The district has equipped the computers with direct access to TinkerCAD, and I am pushing for each student from grades 3 to 5, to have at least one print by the end of the school year. We have several months left, and I have plans up my sleeve! What we need the most is PLA filament. All of the leftover filament will of course stay with the machine and the school. Please help me with these supplies, these kids are printing almost 24 hours a day! With this gift, I can continue to educate them on true computer literacy, and inspire them for the future.
