My students always have an independent reading book with them. They read in school on a daily basis and reflect on their reading. These novels will be used for genre studies, to learn comprehension skills in fiction and non-fiction and to write essays. Students will also be using these books to do a deep study of character. They will choose a character to study and write an essay describing the character's traits and note how the character changes throughout the book. They will also write a literary essay where they will write about their book in terms of the literary elements; plot, theme and mood. Lastly, students will chose a book that relates to a social issue and then they will write an essay.
