The Augmentative/Alternative Communication and Assistive Technology (AAC/AT) team from my school district will be attending a the national ATIA (Assistive Technologies Industries Association) conference in Orlando, Florida. Our AAC/AT team who will be attending the conference includes: two speech/language pathologists, a life skills special education teacher, a physical therapist, and an autism specialist. We secured funding for out airfare and conference admission through a grant and I am now hoping to get funding for my share of the other expenses (hotel, food, and rental car) through this project. This will be our first time attending the ATIA conference as a complete team and we are looking forward to bringing the most current research and practices back to our school district in order to create an effective and inclusive learning environment for our students who require AT and AAC services. Our goal is to provide access to communication for all students regardless of their physical challenges and disabilities as we believe that communication is a fundamental human right, achievable by all. Attending this conference will allow me to learn about new strategies and approaches from some of the leaders in the field. I will learn new skills and strategies for implementing AAC programs school wide and strategies for coaching staff in the best ways to teach the use of AAC systems to our students.
