These hands-on materials will help my students engage in earth science through active exploration. Students will utilize National Geographic Easy Readers to read about minerals, gemstones, rocks and crystals. The books will be utilized during small group guided reading sessions and will help students focus on lower order thinking and higher order thinking comprehension questions. They will also learn about safe lab procedures, utilizing lab equipment, engaging in team building and exploring crystal formation and structures. The Crystal Growing Lab will provide students with the opportunity to explore and research a topic outside of the usual curricula. Students will learn to take measurements, handle soft chemicals, learn rules for safe lab practices, and use a daily log to chart crystal growth. Students will use National Geographic Dig Kits to dig and explore through earth materials and classify objects by color, shape, size, and texture. In addition, students will learn to follow basic social cues like listening and following directions, and working with a partner. By implementing this project into my classroom, students will have the opportunity to explore earth science in a meaningful, engaging way. Through this implementation, students will begin to see themselves as true scientists and explorers! By meeting the needs of my hands-on learners, I will be able to provide them with new avenues of learning. I need your support to make this opportunity a reality!
