In my Humanities American Studies course my students will be crafting interviews and Multi Genre journals centered around their American identity. My team chose How To Steal Like An Artist by Austin Kleon as a resource to get funded because it is an ideal text to show students how to use the artistry and engineering they SEE everyday to create their own works of art, i.e. their own multi-genre portfolios/journals. Furthermore, it will show them HOW to use what they see without plagiarizing! Students will read, discuss, and complete many of the creative activities in How To Steal Like An Artist during this unit. Kleon's text, How To Steal Like An Artist, shows the reader how to see their genius, value the artistry of our world, and create pieces based on what they see in themselves and our world. What is a multi-genre project? "A multi-genre paper (portfolio) arises from research, experience, and imagination [...] A multi-genre paper is composed of many genres and subgenres, each piece self-contained, making a point of its own, yet connected by theme or topic and sometimes by language, images, and content. In addition to many genres, a multi-genre paper may also contain many voices, not just the author's. The trick is to make such a paper hang together" (Romano, Blending Genre, Altering Style i-xi).
