Trauma informed practice in the classroom recognizes that students need a place to regulate without punishment. This space allows students to regulate their mind, body, and/or emotions in order to rejoin the learning environment and build healthy relationships with their peers and teacher without judgement and/or punishment. By being able to stay in the classroom and use the calm space, students are able to see that they belong with their community.
By being able to stay in the classroom to regulate, students are able to observe others use the calm corner and this helps build empathy among each other. This also normalizes for students that everyone struggles with regulation from time to time. These shared experiences provide students opportunities for engagement and lesson the likelihood of bullying.
The tools highlighted for this project allow my students the ability to choose the right regulation tool for them based on their emotional needs in the moment. Fidget tools are great for students who need movement, sensory tools like pillows/weighted animals and putty are great for students who need input, books and headphones are great for students who need calming, and breathing tools are great for students who need support with finding their breath.
