My project involves our Mindfulness and Sensory Tool Library. It is comprised of purposeful items that students could find meaningful and helpful – both for preventative purposes and during times of unsettledness.
Students benefit from sensory tools that help them self-regulate and self-organize to settle down in class and focus on their work. Using a sensory tool give students a chance to think through a situation before reacting in a negative way. It is important for children to identify their own triggers to stress and learn how to keep calm. These tools along paired with social emotional lessons on self-awareness, self management and mindfulness will aim to accomplish that.
These items are great to reduce stress and for helping students whose hands need to stay busy to refrain from engaging in problem behaviors. Often, they enable the children to simply relax and get their mind off what was triggering them. Emotional self-regulation is an essential skill to learn and develop because it allows the child to experience and manage their emotions in healthy and pro-social ways.
I'm really excited about this project, especially because it allows the students autonomy and an opportunity to team up with the teacher for problem solving.
